Egypt Information

Time Zone

Egypt is two hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) during the winter and three hours ahead during the summer, from May 1 to October 1.

The temperature

Local temperatures vary as follows throughout the year (degrees Celsius):

Language

The official language of Egypt is Arabic. However, tourists rarely have difficulty communicating, as English is widely spoken in hotels, shops, and tourist areas. French is also common, and many tourism professionals speak German or Italian.

Always

All nationalities require a tourist visa to enter Egypt. European, American, and Australian citizens can obtain one upon arrival at the airport. Other nationalities should consult their local embassies or consulates for current regulations.

Split

The local currency is the Egyptian pound (E.P.), divided into 100 piastres.

Tuition fees

Tipping is customary in Egypt for services rendered, though it is always at the visitor’s discretion. It is recommended to tip drivers, hotel staff, and waiters in restaurants. Tips for baggage handling at airports and hotels are covered by Essence of Egypt and travel staff.

Photograph

When photographing local people, it is recommended to request permission beforehand; your guide can assist you with this. Photographing military installations or airports is prohibited. Photographic equipment is available in all tourist areas. It is advisable to carry your camera in a dust bag. Many archaeological sites and museums charge additional fees for camera use; your guide will inform you of the current charges.

The voltage in Egypt is 220V. The plugs are compatible with the European standard of two round pins.

Health

Currently, no vaccinations are required to visit Egypt. During your stay, it is recommended to drink only bottled water and avoid street food stalls. It is important to protect yourself from the sun, which can be more intense than it appears due to the breeze and low humidity. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is advised..

Dress code

Modest dress is recommended in Cairo, other cities, and especially in rural areas or when visiting mosques and religious sites. Comfortable, lightweight clothing that covers the knees and shoulders is most appropriate. At Red Sea resorts, pools, and beaches, more casual attire is acceptable, and women may dress similarly to how they would in their home country.

You should always go to the bathroom before leaving the hotel and/or restaurants.

Shopping

Each city has its own specialties; in Egypt you can buy papyrus, djellabas (traditional clothing), perfumes, oils, and spices.

Optional Excursions in Egypt

Memphis and Saqqara

Memphis, located 25 km south of Cairo, was originally the most splendid and ancient capital of Egypt. It contains monuments dating back to the beginning of recorded history, most notably a 13.5-meter statue of Pharaoh Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx, both testaments to the splendor of the Old Kingdom. Nearby lies the vast necropolis of Saqqara, which forms the core of the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the first monumental stone structure. Numerous pyramids and hundreds of tombs called mastabas can be seen, some decorated with exceptionally beautiful paintings and bas-reliefs. The funerary galleries of the sacred Apis bull are particularly impressive. Saqqara was the ancient necropolis city of Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom. Kings, high dignitaries, and even sacred animals were buried within its walls. The Pyramid of Djoser, a pharaoh of the Third Dynasty, is known as the Step Pyramid. This unique pyramid predates those at Giza. It rises in six steps on each of its four sides to the apex.

The Pyramids of Dahshour

Dahshur is located 26 km southeast of Giza. The archaeological site consists of two Stone Pyramids from the Fourth Dynasty, as well as the remains of a necropolis and an Ancient Egyptian city. The latest excavations in the area have just been completed, so it is now open to visitors. The Dahshur Pyramids, though less crowded, are truly spectacular. Two stand out: the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid (whose interior can be visited).
